skincare routine

I don’t want to jinx it, but I feel like I’ve finally figured out what works for my skin.

I went from having average high school acne, to dealing with super dry skin, to battling consistent pimples on my chin and forehead. Bleh. Not only was it frustrating, it was also exhausting trying to stay one step ahead of my ever-changing face.

Settling into a healthy, balanced lifestyle seems to have made a bigger difference than anything in terms of my skin. It’s amazing what consistently nourishing your body, eating a wide variety of foods and exercising regularly can do. Sure, I still eat a lot of “bad skin” foods (ahem, chocolate, chips and wine…) but nobody’s perfect and I’m not willing to give those up. #sorrynotsorry

I absolutely swear by the products I’ve been using over the past few months. Some are drugstore and some are high-end (aka: slightly expensive)ย but, considering I only get one face, I’m willing to invest.

Current Skincare Routine:

Clean & Clear Cleanser –> Benefit It’s Potent! Eye Cream –> Alchimie Protective Morning Cream

Simple Cleansing Wipes –> Alchimie Purifying Cleanser –> SkinOwl Eye+ –> Kypris Antioxidant Dew

Once A Week

No makeup.

Yep. For the past few months I’ve been trying to go one day every week with zero makeup. It tends to happen on lazy days where I’m not working or at an event (obviously) but I don’t force myself to hide indoors. I’ve finally gotten to a point where I don’t mind going out fresh-faced. It’s kind of liberating, actually. My skin absolutely loves it and I wake up the next day feeling completely refreshed.

What are your favorite skincare products? Are you comfortable going out sans-makeup?

Here’s to taking care of our fabulous faces…

  1. Oooh, I have been looking for new skin care stuff! I’m definitely going to look into your stuff! I also spend the weekend without makeup…unless I’m going out at night. It is the best thing ever. My skin feels so good after that!

      Right? I absolutely love it!
Buuuut I love getting all dolled-up sometimes too. ๐Ÿ™‚

Definitely try the Antioxidant Dew from Kypris– it’s my all-time favorite!

      • Oh yes, me too! (Even though I have the “barely there” make up look 99% of the time). ๐Ÿ™‚

        I will! …When I have the money haha #unilife >.<

  2. I’ve struggled with hormonal acne ever since I was 19 (I’m 26 now.) I FINALLY figured out the product that works for me – African Black Soap! I saw a blog post written about how great it was for acne and figured it was cheap and I’d tried everything else so why not! I found a bar at Whole Foods for under $5.00 and have been using it for the past 4 months. I absolutely LOVE it and don’t use anything else on my skin except for the 365 Unscented Lotion. I can’t believe how much it has cleared up my complexion. I get the random blemish here and there but who doesn’t? I think that’s just life! ๐Ÿ™‚

    • Emily said:

What?! I’ve never, ever heard of that but I’m SO intrigued. I’m definitely going to look for it next time I’m at Whole Foods. I love finding all-natural products that are more effective than their toxin-filled counterparts.

I think we’ll all always get those little blemishes but I’m super glad you’ve discovered something that cleared up the worst of it. Such a good feeling. ๐Ÿ™‚

  3. I’ve pretty much declared Sundays (and some Saturdaysโ€ฆ) make-up free days. I love not having to take the time to put make-up on every once in a while!

    • Emily said:

It’s the best feeling ever. And I’ve found that I get more and more confident without makeup every time I go without it.

I never wear make-up, but I do try to wash my face at least 3x a day (morning, after a sweat sesh/long day of work, and before bed). I used to have acne (and bacne!) in high school, so the whole washing my face routine has sort of stuck ๐Ÿ˜›

    • Emily said:

That’s great though! I guess what they say about developing habits is true. ๐Ÿ™‚

LOVE that you never wear makeup. I’m not sure I could go without it every day but it’s definitely nice every once in a while.

  5. Having one makeup free day every week is a good idea. My face needs to breathe! I try to eat less chocolate because I’ve noticed it makes my skin break out ๐Ÿ˜ฆ

    • Emily said:

Ahh…if you’re not giving your skin a “free” day, I highly recommend it! I think it’s the best thing you can possibly do.

And I’ve heard a lot of people who have that reaction to chocolate! Boo…maybe dark chocolate would be better? Antioxidants? haha. Wishful thinking…

  6. I’ve been searching for new skincare products, so I might try some of these out, especially the cleansers and eye cream! I am definitely willing to invest in my skin!

I am trying to become comfortable going without makeup, but right now, my “no makeup” face still has some concealer, bronzer and mascara… I think that defeats the purpose, huh? haha

    • Emily said:

Of all the products, I recommend the Kypris Antioxidant Dew and Skinowl eye+ above anything else. They’re absolutely amazing and 100% non-toxic, vegan and gluten-free. ๐Ÿ™‚

And girl, my “no makeup days” included concealer and mascara up until like 2 months ago so I totally understand that! haha

Ugh I am still trying to find a routine that I can use consistently! With the changing seasons here, it makes things a bit more tricky especially since my skin can be both oily and dry (how?!). The hardest thing for me though is a face moisturizer that doesn’t leave my skin oily.
My current favorite item is expert sensitive gentle cleansing wash, from Target. The only makeup I use is eyeliner, mascara, and a little coverup where there are blemishes but it completely removes all makeup and leaves my face feeling fresh. It is my favorite makeup remover I’ve found thus far!

    • Emily said:

Oh my goodness, I’m SO with you. My skin has always been this weird combination of oily and dry and it’s MISERABLE. I’ve discovered that gentle oils are my best friend. I only use them every once in a while but they’ve made a huuuge difference. SkinOwl– the company that makes the eye+ above– has an argan oil that I swear by. It completely balances my skin.

That cleansing wash sounds amazing! What brand is it?

I’ve been trying to find a skincare routine that works and luckily for now I don’t have to rely on strong creams or irritating face washes but I’ve noticed that a reasonable amount of humidity actually makes me break out less! When I was living in Colorado, it was soooooo dry but I kept having acne breakouts. And now I usually don’t! But I really should try going makeup free — I even wear it before working out which probably isn’t the best.

    • Emily said:

Ahhh… definitely definitely definitely give your skin a break from makeup– especially if you’re sweating! You’ll see a world of difference.

I’m glad you’ve reacted so well to the new weather! My skin definitely does better in more humid climates too. ๐Ÿ™‚
