mental-health days

If I could offer one more piece of advice to anyone that is working (or planning to work) a lot, it’s this…

take a day off.

When I was setting up my work schedules I decided to choose 1 day per week that I would always have off. I knew that for my mental and physical sanity I would need that day to recover from my hectic schedule. Thankfully it worked out for me to request every Thursday off from both jobs. Hallelujah.

I highly recommend this. While most ‘careers’ allow for free weekends, typical food or retail jobs need all of their employees on those days. Le sigh. So pick a day and tell your managers that you’re unavailable. Then, no matter how ridiculous your hours may get, you can always count on that.

So, today was my day off. I went to the gym, did laundry, took a nap, went grocery shopping, cleaned, watched tv, played with Lionel, and got my life all organized for the next week of chaos. Perfect.

IMG_7763Oh yeah, and I splurged and bought this beauty…

IMG_5033In my defense, I really did need something that could hold all of my stuff when I’m running around. Although- does this bag really need an excuse? Does Free People ever need an excuse?

I’m off to shower and possibly pick up Panera for dinner because…well, I want Panera.

Here’s to beautiful, beautiful rest…

  1. I couldn’t agree more about the importance of having a day to yourself. Not only does it give you a chance to catch up on all the things you neglect while you’re running around like crazy, but it always gives you something to look forward to. And I’m loving the whole “because I want to…” attitude 😉 Sometimes we’ve just gotta treat ourselves for no other reason than because… well… we deserve it.

    Happy Thursday, girlie!

Exactly! Sometimes it’s nice to live and just do what we want, because we want to.
Happy Thursday to you as well!

  2. Ahhh, I totally agree with this! That day for me is Sunday. Unfortunately, today was the opposite of a rest day for me. Double shifts are no fun sometimes. 😦
Anyway, I’m glad you had a good day! Mental health days are wonderful.

I totally feel you, girl. I’m working doubles all weekend!
At least you have Sundays off. (:

  3. Mental health days…definitely necessary! I’m lucky that my internship is only twice a week, but I’m also in a 4 week online class and while I’m trying to work ahead, I do need a day off from both once in awhile. And it’s always great to treat ourselves to some shopping, that’s my favorite way to spend a day off!

It sounds like you’ll still have a busy schedule even thought your internship is only 2X per week! At least you’re being super productive though. (:

  4. I agree! Mental health days are so important! It seems like it’s almost looked down upon to use personal days and take vacations in our country, but I don’t understand why! People are so much more productive if they rest every once a while.

      Amen, lady!
PS: You’re a teacher, right? I’m considering going back to school to get my teaching credential. I may be emailing you in the next few weeks for advice!

      • My degree is actually in Communications, but I did teach this year (it was a non-certified position). I plan on explaining my decisions for next (school) year in a post this week. Feel free to email me anytime!

Oooh, okay! I’ll be looking forward to that post. Thank you. (:

  5. I feel you with having to work weekend! That was the main reason I wanted to leave my retail job so I could have my nights and weekends free. Last summer I did the same thing and took at least one day a week off so I could ensure I’d have a free day each week.

Yes! I am a firm believer in just being still and resting. Even if you don’t physically rest (that’s a whole other subject, physical rest is superrr important as well!), mentally resting is so benefical. Oh gosh…that reminds me, I need to get a summer job haha! Where do you work?

      • Emily said:

        Amen!
I work at Starbucks and at a burger restaurant (pretty ironic since I’m a vegetarian but I love it!) (:
Where are you thinking of applying??

Dang sorry, didn’t mean to reply to this comment haha.

So jealous that you’ll have your nights and weekends free this summer- you deserve it!

I go to church on Sundays and Monday is usually the slowest day of the week for us, hence: WEEKEND! 🙂 Or should I call it week beginning? 😎

    • Emily said:

Definitely weekBEGINNING. haha. Love that. (:

  7. A definite yes to taking days off – especially seeing as you’re working two jobs! It’s just impossible to give a hundred per cent every day if you’re never having time to just breathe, relax and do what you feel like.
Hope your weekend’s great despite you having to work!

Sooo true. We all need a little break in order to give our best. Thank you- I hope you are too! ❤

  8. super smart. I love that i have every other friday off AND the weekends … but sometimes having a day off in the middle of the week is better.

That is a very good tip! Will have to keep that in mind once work plans get finalized for the summer!

  10. This post is great. I think too many of us are too worried about disappointing or not doing enough… but if we dont take time for ourselves along with to reflect, we will eventually be hurting ourselves. Cute picture!
